I think I am slowly learning to recognise some Chinese characters spontaneously too. This song is easy to grasp and still very poetic. Love it! I especially love the start where a person's absence is likened to experiencing a missing question to an existing answer, and to having eyes but without scenery to appreciate.
Perhaps, by the time I die, I will be literate in Chinese.

Did you watch Love and Destiny? This was the song used in the show. All the songs in the show are beautiful. (The show is not a must-watch, though the set is beautiful.)
I did watch Love and Destiny. In fact, I am still watching it. I love this series the best out of all I watched. I think I have a major crush on the God of War nearer the end of the series. The dialogue is realistic and moving (I think). Chang Chen's eyebrows can really act! LOL!
The storyline is so so but the sets and cinematography are beautiful. I still much prefer Nirvana in Fire 2 - the wond blows in Changlin.
For Love and Destiny I wish they cut down on the first two arcs and gave more time to the third arc.
@Rachel... what are the 3 arcs you refer to? (1) The Yuan family shame (2) The earthly tribulations (3) The opened dark portal? For me, I am super sentimental so I very much liked the courtship story starting during the earthly tribulations.
Noted about Nirvana in Fire 2. Will watch that after I am done re-watching Love and Destiny. I always watch a series thrice because I am learning Chinese too. Successive cycles allow me to capture more language because the first round has too much richness (colours, sets, characters, language, costumes and story arcs).
Love and Destiny has three arcs as in three lives of LingXi:
1) The heavenly realm arc, about 20 plus episodes;
2) The mortal arc, about 20 plus episodes, when LingXi was a mortal; and
3) Back to LingXi's life in the heavenly realm - about 10 episodes.
This is why the original title of Love and Destiny was Three Lives, Three Worlds.
Your command of the Chinese language must be pretty strong; I'm not able to understand some of the richer dialogues. Contemporary drama is much easier (on the soul, the emotions, and in the language processing).
Oh help - the soundtracks are still ringing in my head.
Oh no! I suck at Chinese. That is why I need to rewatch the same series at least 3 times to get the language. This said, I have improved after watching quite a few series. RE" the soundtracks... I Know Right!!
If you can follow the plot of Love and Destiny, then your Chinese is definitely not weak :) It's really not the easiest show to understand.
The technical production is of excellent quality.
Although one can argue that Chinese fantasy shows are nonsensical and unrealistic, it gives a glimpse into the ancient Chinese notion of feminine beauty, which I really appreciate, as there is an ethereal, elegant, subtle quality to it, and is often intertwined with some moral notion of virtue too. Am I right to say that the Western notions of beauty tend to be more sensual and sexualised?
Also, I may be bias, but I think the Chinese notion of duty and honour are also very deep and rich (you'll understand it after watching Nirvana in Fire II).
I am partial to historical dramas. Even though I do know that these C dramas don't approach any serious study of history, I am still a sucker for anything that looks like it is set in a historical context. I am also big on Tolkien like settings. Love and Destiny has both. It has beautiful monsters and magic powers and mysterious artifacts. The love story arc is a by the way... and very enjoyable but I don't really like the contemporary romances. They are missing all the other stuff that I really like. The notions of duty and honour are also attractive along with the notion that ladies are feminine and men are heroic. Deep down inside, I think I still have dreams of wanting to be a Princess in a fairytale.
The other thing that I find fascinating is in the comparison of what is VIRTUOUS in Western drama and C Drama. The view of the world is quite different, and I am very curious about this new moral construct.
The notion of reincarnation often reappears and so, I have started reading up on reincarnation and Buddhism too.
Oh wow Petunia if you like Historical Dramas which are research-based, there are one ton of such non-fictional historical Chinese dramas.
Wuxia is fictional, albeit in a historical setting, often times a specific period.
But there are a ton of other non-wuxia and non-xianxia dramas, from the Heroes of Sui and Tang, to Three Kingdoms - great history lessons. A lot of research goes into the sets, costumes, fabrics, mannerisms, practices etc in attempts to stay as true as possible to history. Also in China, there are an army of people to undertake various aspects of research and production. In the same way you have an army of people to act in battle scenes and all. Hence the production of Chinese dramas is often at a very different scale than dramas produced anywhere else in the world.
Please recommend as many as you can!!
I haven't found any historical nonfiction Chinese dramas that I really like yet haha. Three Kingdoms is too serious for me....politics and no romance leh.
