I was thrilled to discover that a North American parenting forum is holding a book discussion on Dr. Pet's book. You can find the discussion HERE.

If you cannot access, you can see a few screen shots below.

Hi Petunia,

It was good reading through the review. Refreshed my memory though I have been practising on some of the pointers in the book - structured choices, emotional connection, focus on process and strengthen self efficacy. I think the part on letting the child risk failure and even experience it without dire consequences is the best.

I took your advice and for the whole of P1, as there was no streaming, I used it to guide my daughter in her school life and academics. For example, I was always the one who had to rush her to get ready for the school bus. After one term, I decided I had enough and took the cue from your book. I checked her schedule to confirm there was no test and quietly messaged the school bus uncle that she would not be going to school. I did not rush her that day and she realised she was late. I refused to bring her to school, using her younger siblings as an excuse. She cried and begged me to write a letter of excuse for her which I turned her down. She was so upset and worried the whole day until I finally agreed to write the letter at 9pm. Now, she will wake up before her alarm goes off.

I'm applying the techniques on my younger kids now. Varying results as my time is more limited and they are different in temperament but working too.
