After the big hoo-ha on Amy Chua's Chinese Mother, meet the Chinese Girlfriend by Christine H. Tan based in Shanghai via London, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.
Daelight & Theamne - The author grew up in London, Singapore and Malaysia... And dates a Caucasian.
She is both satirizing Amy Chua's article, and caricatures the way some Chinese girls behave in relationships. Whilst some of us do a little of what the article describes, nobody actually does all of it all the time and in such large doses.
I look at it like a Bollywood movie... No one really dances around trees all that much.
It is actually skillfully done because there are little grains of truth here and there. For example, when The Daughter grew up The Husband found it awkward to hug and kiss her and put her on his lap. They both evolved a way of showing affection for each other. They trade insults that make me cringe! I don't reckon this is specifically Chinese though because David Eddings created a situation just like that between fictional characters Polgara and Beldin. And David Eddings is as Americam as they come.
Gotta read this as a joke. I am sure she treats her Caucasian boyfriend like any normal Chinese girl.
Wen-Ai: Yeah... We look like absolute MONSTERS don't we? But it's ok... as long as we know that we aren't really like that, we can laugh at ourselves.
The Husband guffawed all the way through The Girlfriend article and then said "But people dunno that Chinese girls are ******** and ***** and ****... and that's why I like 'em". But of course he's biased. He married a Chinese Girl.
Your husband would probably say the same thing!!
On another note, he also commented that neither article would have gotten published without the global Chinese community developing greater confidence in itself... to the extent that it can PUBLICLY laugh at itself.
